How hydrovac jobs are usually billed
- Hourly, with a minimum. The Hydrovac Hotline 2026 guide says it doesn't publish a single national rate, and notes the minimum billable block is often around a half day including mobilization. Ask what the minimum is and whether travel time counts.
- Per hole or per foot for well-defined potholing or trenching programs.
- Day rates or contracts for recurring work. The same guide notes recurring municipal contracts may see roughly 15–25% lower rates.
What changes the price
- Soil and frost: clay, rock, and frozen ground can slow production by about 30–50% (Hydrovac Hotline). In a Michigan winter, heated-water work adds cost.
- Travel / mobilization: charges commonly start once a site is beyond roughly 25–50 miles from the operator's yard.
- Disposal: slurry dump fees and haul distance, plus testing or special handling if the site may be contaminated.
- Water source: whether the truck can refill on site (hydrant permits) or must leave to refill.
- After-hours or emergency work.
- Traffic control, pavement cutting, and restoration.
- Truck size and crew (e.g., a larger unit vs a smaller trailer-mounted vac).
Hydrovac vs mechanical digging cost
Per hour, Hydrovac Hotline puts hydro excavation at roughly 1.5–3× the cost of mechanical excavation. The trade-off is lower risk of striking a buried line, which can mean repair costs, downtime, and serious safety hazards.
Typical production rates (for budgeting)
- Potholing: about 3–5 holes in 4–8 hours
- Slot trenching: about 100–300 feet per day
- Pipeline exposure: about 6–12 hours

Get comparable quotes
Give every operator the same scope (number of holes or trench length, depths, utilities, site access, disposal, working hours), then ask for the minimum charge, hourly or unit rate, travel, disposal, and any surcharges in writing.
