Lead service line replacement
The City of Muskegon says it has been replacing lead service lines since 2016 and expects every line to be replaced before 2037. It estimates the total cost of replacing all lines at over $60 million. The city also reports that lead in its drinking water has stayed low: in its 2023 water report, 90% of samples were at or below 5 ppb, well under the 15 ppb action level. Service line replacement means many small excavations at curb stops and building entries, which is where vacuum excavation keeps openings small.
Sandy ground
Muskegon's lakeshore is known for quartz sand beaches and large dunes. In sandy soil, hydro excavation moves quickly, but loose sand can slough into the hole. Deeper openings may need extra care, and a dry, clean sand backfill plan helps restoration.
Utilities
Consumers Energy provides electric service in the Muskegon area, and the City of Muskegon runs its water system. See the MPSC natural gas service area map for gas territory.
